What is the Hertz student discount? | The Student Pocket Guide

Great news for students as when they hire a car or van with Hertz they can take advantage of the student discount. That means 15% off cars and 20% off vans. All you need to do when taking advantage of the offer is to present a valid student ID and a credit card in your name which was used to make the booking.

Students hiring a car or van with Hertz are also required to have held a driving licence for over one year and you will need to prove this by showing your driving license at the pick-up. Students must also be aged 23 or over to hire a vehicle with Hertz and for anyone aged 23, there will be a Young Driver Surcharge (YDS) to pay.

A YDS is a fee that young drivers have to pay on top of the cost of rental. The price of YDS differs from country to country but there is usually a maximum amount you can pay, which means you won’t pay over this amount for each vehicle you hire. For example in the UK YDS is £25 a day, with a maximum per rental of £250. In Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands the YDS is €16.50 per day with a maximum cost per rental of €165. For a full list of prices take a look on the Hertz web site.

The student discount is available all over Europe in the following locations.

  • France
  • Belgium
  • Spain
  • Luxembourg
  • Norway
  • Germany
  • UK
  • Netherlands
  • Switzerland
  • Slovakia
  • Czech Republic
  • Italy

Imagine what an incredible road trip that would be! Much more comfortable than inter-railing, you could just throw some bags in the back of your car and zoom off around Europe. It’s also possible to hire a van in all of the above countries with the exception of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

As well as road trips abroad, you might want to hire a van or car to visit friends around the country, or for a quick weekend trip to the British seaside. Not only can you get 15% off car rental and 20% off van hire, but you could split the cost of hiring a vehicle between friends to make it even cheaper.

Running a car whilst at university is not an option for most students, but at least you know you can hire a car when you really need one.
