The Best High Street Coats Of 2014 by Charlotte Simon

Coats are no longer the things you hastily grab on the way out of the door; this year they have become statement pieces and a staple part of your wardrobe. High street stores have gone all out this season, offering catwalk inspired pieces at great prices. In an effort to make your coat and jacket hunt a little easier, we’ve trawled the web for the best coats available to keep you snuggly in the colder months.

Faux fur has risen in popularity thanks to an improvement in technology, making fabrics look and feel much closer to the real thing. Whether it is leopard print, bold colour, super squishy or short pile, the fluffy stuff is here to stay.

If you want a timeless look and are feeling brave go for animal print, team with leather look trousers and heels. If you’re not feeling quite so confident or you’re a fur-newbie, go for a piece with a fur collar or panel, and go all out yeti-style next year!

Winter is usually the season where we all lean toward more neutral (dull) shades, but that doesn’t need to extend to your outerwear. Don’t get me wrong, you can never go wrong with a camel overcoat but this season’s releases give you the chance to edge away from neutrals. There’s no need to put up any competition with the rest of your outfit though, black and navy underneath will make the colour-pop all the more striking.

Saturated hues also have the benefit of brightening your complexion and modernising your existing wardrobe. If you’re doubtful about whether you can pull off crazy-brights, or are worried you’ll look like a highlighter pen, check out some street-style blogs for inspiration.

Initially created as an alternative for soldiers in WWI, the trench coat has since evolved into a wardrobe staple for many.Form flattering, versatile and stylish, they provide a great external silhouette in any month. If, however, you don’t have a spare £600 knocking about for an iconic Burberry piece, these high street alternatives are the next best thing.

And just in case we haven’t tickled your fancy with any of our other choices, here’s three others that incorporate the main outerwear trends this winter; pastels, casual silhouettes, texture rich fabrics and a little bit of leather.

We wish you the best of luck on your hunt for the perfect winter coat!
