Hurray for Hummus! The 13th of May every year, marks the celebration of the world renowned, decadent dip known as Hummus. The luxurious blend, which can be used for spreading or dunking, dates way back into the ancient times in the middle east and has since then, become a global phenomena in the culinary world where it can be found just about anywhere.

The word Hummus actually states Chickpea in Arabic and with that, indulges into its key ingredient. This proving once more, much like cheese, tomatoes and bread (pizza), the most enjoyable things can come from the upmost of simplicity and what better way to celebrate it, than by making some Hummus of your own?

Here at the SPG we got our chief taster’s into the kitchen to conjure up the ultimate mixture of Hummus goodness and with that, we’ve devised a quality, fool proof recipe that’ll leave you dipping into it for days…

You will need…
• A can of your favourite Chickpeas
• Lemon Juice
• 2 cloves of Garlic (finely diced)
• A Teaspoon of ground Cumin
• Salt
• Paprika
• 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
• 70ml of Water
• Dunking delights of your choice (Pita, Crisps etc.)

Drain off the chickpeas of the liquid they are in, in the can and place into a food processor or a large bowl.

Alongside those, add the juice of half a lemon, the diced garlic cloves, a large pinch of salt, all the water and the ground cumin.

If you’re using a food processor, blitz the ingredients until they become combined. However, if you don’t have a food processor, a quick blast in the microwave will make the peas easier to mash up with a fork or spoon. In the end, you’re looking for a pulpy, paste texture with the ingredients thoroughly mixed.

Be sure to add more salt, lemon, garlic, water or cumin to taste and when you’re happy with the flavour, turn the paste out onto a plate.

Drizzle over the olive oil and a dusting of paprika until you’re satisfied, from that, you’re ready to munch!

Grab your dunking delights and smash your way through this beauty of a snack. So, whether you combine it with carrots, pitas or the old faithful of crisps, there is no denying that this will leave you licking your lips. Long live Hummus and let’s celebrate this pallet pleasing puree for the years to come.
