We are constantly hearing nowadays about how we are living in a very unhealthy society and with statistics suggesting that over half of adults (64%) are overweight or obese, we have reason to be alarmed. It’s often a topic mentioned on the news, and debated about in televisions shows, but it seems no matter how much it’s bought up in conversation, nothing really seems to be done to help the issue… until now that is!

The fact is, in the UK, more of us are now considered to be overweight or obese than we are a healthy weight. This is dangerous due to the various diseases and conditions that we are prone to if we have a high BMI.

Here are just some of the conditions we can end up with…
– Type 2 diabetes
– High blood pressure
– Heart disease
– Stroke
– Sleep Apnea
– Kidney disease
– Fatty liver

It’s well-known that we didn’t used to be such an unhealthy society, so who exactly is responsible for such a rise in obesity? Is it just us as consumers, or do the manufactures of these sugary products have some part to play?

For the first time, today, a major supermarket chain, Tescos, have announced that from 7th September this year, they will no longer be selling some sugary drinks. Capri-Sun and Ribena are two brands that have received the axe from Tescos.

Chances are, Tesco’s decision will divide public opinion, with some people being glad a company has finally taken a stance, whilst others thinking that consumers should have the right to choose what they put into their bodies. One things for certain though… the brands being scrapped certainly won’t be too happy!

What’s your opinion? Do you think Tescos are being unfair to scrap these brands, or should other supermarkets follow their lead? Let us know by sending us a tweet @TheSPG.
