Markets are a great way to pass the time on a weekend. Whether you are shopping for food, clothes, or second hand books, the UK has a whole host for you to explore. And here at Student Pocket Guide we’ve compiled a list of some of the best markets in England…
Borough Market, London
It’s London’s most renowned food market and is an incredible place to grab lunch with friends. Food lovers flock to Southwark on the weekend and with such exceptional quality produce on offer, we can’t blame them. Whether you want to savour delicious British foods, or taste something a little more international, there are plenty of opportunities to do so.
Kirkgate Market, Leeds
Located in Leeds’ Victorian Quarter, this stunning market really is something you shouldn’t miss when in the area. Set under an impressive canopy of glass and ironwork are 800 market stalls. From fresh meat and fish, to gourmet foods and household items are sold to the hoards of market goers. And with this many stalls to peruse, you won’t be surprised to find out it’s one of the largest indoor markets in Europe.
Leicester Market, Leicester
It’s been voted ‘Britain’s Favorite Market’ and it’s easy to see why. Leicester Market is located in the heart of the city and can be visited six days a week. Its three hundred market stalls sell a range of produce including the traditional fruit and vegetables, as well as ethnic herbs and spices. And if you want to grab yourself a fashion bargain head to some of the second hand clothing stalls.
Columbia Road Flower Market, London
If you want to visit a market that’s a little different to your standard local marketplace then head to Columbia Road in London. On Sunday this East London Street is transformed into a hub of colourful produce and beautiful floral fragrances. And if you want to spruce up your uni pad, be sure to buy some of the freshly cut flowers that are on offer.
Norwich Market
Under the watchful eye of Norwich Castle, you’ll be able to browse the stalls of the largest open-air market in the country. It’s open six days a week and visiting the Norwich Market, with it’s rich heritage and tradition, is a must. Local foodstuffs, such as jams, chutneys and cheeses, are served on a number of the stalls. And you’ll also be able to glance at the jewellery, flower and clothes stalls too.
