Future Talent Awards

To some people, there’s no greater joy than seeing their name on a piece of work they’ve done, thinking I did that. If you’re one of those people, then have you tried your hand at writing for your student newspaper? Have you considered presenting your own student radio show?

Whilst some may think that these opportunities are exclusive to journalism students, that’s certainly not the case! Let’s be honest, if you’re a huge music fan, then you can definitely host your own radio show, because you can choose the music!

Another misconception is that you have to write about the news to be a part of the student newspaper. That’s not always the case, either! With most student newspapers there’s often a lifestyle or culture section, where you can talk about anything such as TV, films and fashion.

The great thing about these opportunities is that you can choose what you want to do with it. It can be something which you take seriously or a thing you do for fun. What you choose to write about, or do for the radio show, is entirely up to you – and that’s what makes it great.

The main thing about student media is that it shows you’re keen to get stuck in. It’s extremely important experience for student journalists to have, but regardless of what course you’re taking, it’s another one of those things which you can stick on your CV and be proud of, where you can look back at the work you’ve done and think I did that.
