Autumn TV Series by Georgina Rowe

It’s nearly Autumn again, and with Autumn comes a whole new load of TV series for us to watch. So here’s a list of the best Autumn TV series.

1. Doctor Who
Series 8, BBC1, 23.08.14

For those that don’t know, Doctor Who is a sci-fi series which was revived in 2005 by Russell T. Davies after its original 26 year run ended in 1989, and it has been gaining momentum ever since. It features a character known as ‘The Doctor’ who travels throughout history alongside various companions, including Rose (played by Billie Piper), Amy (played by Karen Gillian) and Clara (played by Jenna Coleman). Together, The Doctor and his companion travel throughout history, fighting evil and saving galaxies.

Whilst the 12th Doctor is returning in August rather than September, we here at The Student Pocket Guide felt the need to include him here. The return of the hit series marks Peter Capaldi’s introduction to the role, and fans are holding their breath as to whether he’ll live up to the name.

2. Broadchurch
Series 2, ITV1,TBC – 2014

Abodus - Live until 29th Sep 24

Broadchurch debuted in March last year, wowing audiences with its gritty and intense portrayal of the murder of a young boy, Danny, and the aftershock. The show, starring Olivia Colman and David Tennant as detectives Ellie and Alec, depicted how the murder affected both Danny’s family and the entire community.

Olivia Colman dazzled as Police Detective Ellie in last year’s award winning first series. The second series’ premiere date is unconfirmed, but it will be shown at some point during 2014. As Tennant has signed on to the US re-make (Gracepoint) it is thought to be unlikely that he will be joining the cast for its second series, but the strong acting and brilliant script will ensure that it stays at the same excellent quality as it has previously been.

3. Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Series 2, Channel 4, Sept. 2014

The Marvel spin-off series ‘Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ began last year, as a labour of love from Buffy writer Joss Whedon. The show is about a group of agents from S.H.I.E.L.D (the agency which assisted the Avengers in the 2012 film) who investigate strange and out-of-this-world crimes. The show did reasonably well across the Atlantic and was a big hit with die-hard Whedon and Marvel fans everywhere.

Although no official premiere date has been released for the second series, it has been confirmed for September so you will be able to watch it very soon after its US air date. The entire cast has returned for series 2 and we’re sure that fans of the show will be avidly awaiting the resolution of the cliff-hanger from last series’ finale!
