A Weekend In Amsterdam by Sage Fitzpatrick
Amsterdam; the home of canals, coffee shops and stroopwafels. If you are planning a weekend in Amsterdam, we have a few suggestions of things to do whilst you’re in this beautiful city.
Did you know that Amsterdam boasts the only floating flower market in the world? Each flower stall is built upon a houseboat on the Singel canal, located in the southern part of the city. The Bloemenmarkt sells an array of flowers and souvenirs and is an exciting colourful site to see in every season.
The Anne Frank House is another thing that you can do whilst visiting Amsterdam and is a real must for history students out there. Here you can visit the secret annex in which Anne Frank and her family lived for a number of years during Nazi rule, learning about their life in hiding. Just a note, it does get very busy, so if you want to avoid queuing for hours, get there early. It may also be a good idea to order tickets from the website in advance.
Amsterdam is a spectacular city, one that should be explored as much as possible. You may decide to hire a bicycle and travel the way real Dutchmen do, or if this isn’t your idea of fun, purchase a ticket for one of the many canal boat tours. You’ll get to learn the geography of the city, whilst also stumbling across some hidden gems along the way. How else are you going to find that cute clothing boutique or get that amazing coffee you so desperately crave?
Next up is something completely touristy that you could do during your weekend away. You’ve probably already seen a number of varieties of this picture during your initial Amsterdam research phase. Why not visit the Amsterdam sign and have your photo taken with the letters? There is currently a set located behind the Riijksmuseum. And once you’ve done climbing and posing, why not visit this museum, or head over to the Van Gosh museum, which is only a short distance away.
