Check out Kiss FM’s, Charlie Hedges Top Five Tips to Secure a Job after Uni…

Work experience – It might seem like a bit of a chore when all your mates are out every weekend, but it’ll pay off in the long term I promise. You’ll be making contacts along the way and gaining hands-on experience in the field that you’re interested in. Work experience also enables you to try out jobs you thought you might like but in fact, might find aren’t for you – this isn’t a bad thing because it’ll save you time in the long term when it comes to getting the job you want and going down the right career path.

Be yourself– It’s a statement you hear people say all the time I’m sure but I honestly think it’s true.Be yourself and the ambitious, hardworking, enthusiastic person that you are will shine through to your employers which, trust me, goes a long, long way and can help you to stand out amongst the rest.

Networking – This is soooooo important! Making contacts can, in some circumstances, be the most critical thing when getting a job. You’d be surprised at how many emails get sent when a colleague is leaving and the company asks internally if employees know of anyone who would fit the job description and would want to come in for an interview – unfortunately it’s true that sometimes it’s not what you know, it’s who you know! Again, gaining contacts from work experience can go a very long way.

Make a 5 year plan – This is so helpful to help you focus your efforts and for your future employer to see where your head’s at and what ambitions you have in life. A potential boss will know where they stand with you then and vice versa, it shows that you’re serious, ambitious and forward thinking. It’s something I’ve always done and it’s the best feeling in the world when you start ticking your ‘achieved’ list off!

And lastly, have fun – What’s the point of being in a job you’ve worked so, so hard to study for, for a good few years of your life to then work in an environment and type of job you don’t like? Having fun is what life is all about sometimes, we work more years of our life than we don’t so let’s make these years good ones and always remember this: you’ve studied hard and are capable of achieving anything you want

Good luck everyone xxx
