In the early hours of this morning, our mighty-fine England’s Ladies football team played their semi-final game against Japan. The two teams were drawing 1-1, until devastatingly, in the 92nd minute, England’s defender, Laura Bassett scored an own goal, making the score 2-1 and knocking England out of the World Cup. Despite her misfortune, there’s been an overwhelming amount of support shown for the talented footballer…
Here’s the moment Laura mistakenly scored the deciding goal
Laura was evidently very upset by her error, but her team mates and coach, Mark Sampson, showed their support for her with Sampson labelling her, ‘An absolute hero.’
Thousands of fans and celebrities also showed their support for the England star on Twitter, which was shown by the fact the hashtag, ‘Proud of Bassett’ started trending in the UK.
Amongst the celebrities to show their support was Match Of The Day host and ex football himself, Gary Lineker.
It may be a dreadful way to lose, but we say well done Laura – you and your team mates have done us all proud.
