World Lion Day was on Monday and today we celebrate the life of another African land mammal – the elephant. Check out our amazing, surprising facts about these humongous creatures… Oh and happy World Elephant Day!

1. They’re no jumping jacks…
Elephants are the only mammal that can’t jump.

2. You thought 9 months was bad…
Elephants are pregnant for 22 months! That’s almost two years.

3. We’re not the only ones that are right or left handed…
Elephants tend to favour one tusk over the other, meaning they’re left or right tusked!

4. They’re practically divers…
Elephants use their trunk like a snorkel to breathe when they’re swimming.

5. And that’s not the only use they’re trunks have…
Elephants hug by wrapping their trunks round one another’s.

Elephants purr to communicate.

7. Their ears aren’t the only body part they use to listen…
Elephants can use their feet to pick up on noise through the ground.

8. They’re grey but can turn slightly pink…
Elephants can get sunburnt so use sand to protect themselves.

9. You wouldn’t have thought they had this phobia…
Elephants, even though they’re rather large in comparison, are afraid of bees.

10. They may be more intelligent than we realise…
Elephants are the only other animal apart from dogs, to instinctively understanding pointing.
