Travelling is a great way to experience new cultures and places, not to mention to meet new people.

But it can also be extremely expensive, especially for students.

Luckily, there are a number of apps which are ideal for the budget traveller, and the best part? They’re all free to download!

1) AirBnB

Sick of staying in grubby hostels? Don’t worry. AirBnB has you covered.

This app lets you browse places to stay in the area you want, for the dates you want.

And the prices are usually pretty decent, especially if you are travelling as part of a group. Once you’ve found a place you like, simply message the host who will decide if

A lot of the hosts won’t charge you if you add more people to your party too!

2) Uber

Yup, good ol’ Uber. The trusty taxi alternative app is fantastic for travellers all over the world.

Especially if you don’t have enough cash on you for a taxi ride back to your accommodation!

With Uber you pay online – perfect!

No more waiting in long taxi queues.

3) Wi-Fi finder

Let’s face it. Data roaming is a real pain. Travelling can cause you to rake up huge bills that, quite frankly, just make you want to curl up and cry when you see the bill.

So, of course, free wi-fi is an essential need. But it can be difficult finding places which have it.

Wi-Fi Finder allows you to find all the free wifi spots near you – but that’s not all. Its offline mode allows you to download maps before heading to your destination, saving you a mountain in roaming charges! Pretty sweet!

4) World Currency Converter

Getting to grips with a foreign currency can be pretty confusing, especially if you’ve budgeted your trip in pounds. Thankfully this app does all the maths for you!

You can convert to and from your chosen currency and even check the currency exchange rates!

How useful is that?

5) Skyscanner Flights

Everyone loves a bargain, and what’s better than being able to find cheap flights?

Skyscanner lets you search ticket prices from your preferred airports to your desired destination.

The app also tells you which flights are the cheapest and the shortest! Perfect.
