Future Talent Awards

We caught up with former JLS member, Aston Merrygold, to talk about his newest album, dance moves, and Michael Jackson!

Who were your biggest musical inspirations when growing up?

Biggest influencers were Michael Jackson, James Brown then as l got older watching what Justin Timberlake did with taking similar influences. I always loved Usher too – everyone bringing something different to the music, but MJ was the king!

You toured with Jason Derulo! How awesome was that?

Yeah that was fun man. He’s a good guy and it was great to get out with the UK crowd again.

Abodus - Live until 29th Sep 24

How would you describe your music?

It’s Pop with influences of various genres. l wouldn’t say it sits in one lane, there are some upbeat tracks, some ballads and some reggae. Motown is a huge influence for me,  l guess that’s a sound that would be recognised throughout a lot of my music.

Who influences the music you make the most?

There’s no one specific who influences what l go in and write, its more about having a vibe and creating. If it works it works!

What is your biggest achievement to date?

Being able to do what l love.

Your brand new track I Ain’t Missing You, how does it differ from your previous work?

It’s just a bit more of a current sound. I wrote it as a ballad and worked with the producers ‘LDN Noise’ who transformed it into an upbeat track.

What do you enjoy most and least about being a part of the music industry?

I love making music, meeting and working with likeminded people and being lucky enough to perform.

Least –  There are sometimes hurdles that you have to jump over to get where you need to go along the way.

Is there any of your work you are proud of in particular and why?

Anything l put out would only go out because l’m proud of it… so the stuff you’ve heard ..l’m proud of!

Your dance moves are incredible, how did you learn to dance?

Dancing is always something l’ve loved. As a kid l just observed,  picked up certain moves and it naturally became an element to my performances.

What are you currently working on?

New music!!! Working on material for my album which took a slight change in direction to the album l almost put out last year.

What a nice guy? You can check out Aston’s brand new single right here!
