Choose The Right School

Surviving grad school is not just about doing the work, you also need to make sure that you choose the right school. If a school isn’t right for you then you aren’t going to enjoy it and it is going to be a lot more difficult. You should make sure that you do a lot of research on the grad schools that you are considering, take a look at the entry requirements, do the best GRE prep and talk to other students. If you find out that a school might not be a good fit for you then you can try somewhere else and you will be more likely to survive over the years.

Don’t Do Everything

As you go through grad school, you are going to be informed about a lot of different opportunities. It is important that you make sure that you don’t sign up for everything. You are going to have a very heavy workload and if you have a few different internships and a job to also focus on, you aren’t going to survive. Learn to pick out the best opportunities for you and only agree to do the things that you can manage. This way, you’ll be able to come out the other side.

Go To Class

Many people make the mistake of missing classes to catch up on their other work, but this is something which you should avoid. Of course, if you can’t make a class then it is fine to miss one or two, but you should try to make as many as possible. Missing classes to catch up on other work only puts you even more behind so try to get all of the information that you can by making an appearance at every class.

Talk To Peers

Many people struggle with grad school because they get consumed by the workload and don’t find time to talk to your peers. If you sit down and have a chat about the workload, you might find that your peers could have some tips for you. They might even be able to help you with studying or finding a study group. You need to be independent in grad school but don’t isolate yourself if you want to be able to survive. It always helps to talk to someone when you are struggling.

Surviving grad school is not as difficult as you might think. Make sure to follow our advice and you should be able to make it to the end!
