Ever considered trying your hand at volunteering? This National Student Volunteering Week (11-17 February) the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is encouraging students nationwide to sign up and give any hours they can spare, to help out either in a shop or at an event. Here’s ten reasons why now is the time to get involved:Boost your CV
Too busy studying to get a part time job but still want something to make your CV stand out from the crowd? Volunteering is a great way to enhance your resume and get invaluable work experience while working towards your qualification. At the BHF we offer volunteering opportunities of just a few hours a week, which can fit easily around Uni or college.
Did you know you can choose your own hours? Shifts can easily fit around your studies so that there’s no falling behind!
Learn skills on the job
There’s a lot to learn in a busy retail environment, from serving and working the till, to creating eye-catching window displays and organising stock donations. Through volunteering in your local store you will learn teamwork skills, become adept at problem solving and get to grips with the day-to-day running of a busy retailer.
Gain a qualification
For our volunteers who decide a career in retail is for them, there is even the opportunity to apply for one of our apprenticeship roles. This means earning a good wage while working towards a retail apprenticeship qualification.
Put yourself out there
One of the great things about volunteering with the BHF is the people and the chance to meet people from all walks of life; as well as helping to enhance social skills and hopefully make friends along the way!
Develop your confidence
One of the most important skills you can gain from working in a BHF shop is building your confidence, so that when those first job interviews as a graduate or college leaver roll around, you’ll be ready to shine.
Have a laugh
It’s not all hard work! Volunteering can also be a great opportunity to have fun and brighten up your day. Many of our volunteers talk about the great sense of community amongst their teams of all ages as well as having a good giggle over a cup of tea.
Raising money for heart research
By volunteering at your local BHF store you‘ll be helping raise vital funds for research into heart and circulatory diseases. 7 million people in the UK are currently living with heart disease. Sign up to volunteer with the BHF and you can help beat heartbreak forever.
Debunk old stereotypes of student behaviour and seize the chance to give back to your local community.
That ‘feel good’ factor
There’s nothing like the feeling of finishing a shift and knowing that it’s all been for a good cause. BHF charity shops raise millions each year for vital research, but without their amazing volunteers it wouldn’t be possible. Come join the team and feel great!
