The most important and difficult part after finishing high school is deciding what your major should be in college. There are literally hundreds and thousands of majors; from the most common subjects like Chemistry, Literature, and Computer to more obscure ones like Baking, Comedy, and Mythology & Folklore. Some students know what they want to do in life while others have barely begun thinking about it. But don’t fret! We are here to help you narrow down your choice! When selecting a college major, you should keep the following points in mind:

Career

You need to pick a major that will give you a bright future. Having a specific career or goal in mind will help you in narrowing down your college major subjects. Want to be a nurse? You can choose Biology, Medicine, or any other major that will be helpful in your future nursing career. What to be an astronaut? You have options like Mathematics or Engineering. However, before finalising your major, you should take a class or two, talk to senior students, check out the syllabus and then decide whether you see a future for yourself in this field or not.

Earning potential

It is important to note that in most countries, college is expensive and students mostly borrow loans from banks for higher studies. Keeping this in mind, the college major that you choose should be one that will help you financially once you reach the job market after graduation. According to PayScale, petroleum engineering, electrical engineering, computer sciences, economics, and business are some of the majors that can lead to higher salaries and have more earning potential than others. However, a six-digit salary is not worth it if you are not happy, which leads us to the next point.

What you love

Some students select a major just because they love the subject and they decide to pursue a career in it. You are more likely to get better grades in your courses and relations with your fellow students and teachers if you love what you are doing and are passionate about it. This will also result in an overall wonderful college experience for you.

Still undecided?

Even if you are still undecided there is no need to worry! Many colleges do not ask students to decide their college major in their first year. You can still take the required general courses for the first year and college also gives you the opportunity to explore different subjects without being bound to a single major. You can also explore the campus and different departments, talk to the students, faculty, and then decide which major you are most interested in and can see your future in.
