As thousands of students get ready to start university in September, theknowledgeacademy.com took to Instagram to identify which educational establishment is the most Instagrammable picture-perfect*.
The University of Oxford is not just one of the oldest universities in the world (there is evidence of teaching as early as 1096!) but it is also the most popular on Instagram.
To date, it has been tagged 362,937 times on the photo sharing service. That’s an average of 994 pictures posted per day. While rival University of Cambridge is runner-up with 254,102 Instagram hashtags – 108,835 less than Oxford university!
University of Leeds, University of Glasgow and University of York make the top 5 – with 143,483, 135,831 and 124,557 Instagram hashtags, respectively.
Thereafter, tags drop by over 35,000 to bring Newcastle University in 6th place (89,270).
At the close of the top 20 we find relatively new establishments (at least when compared with Oxford and Cambridge!) Lancaster University (59,095) and Northumbria University (56,301), founded in the 1960s and 1990s, respectively.
*Instagram hashtags for 129 universities in the UK were analysed to identify the top 20. Readings were taken 05/08/2020. Please note: this data is live and subject to fluctuation.
