It’s never too late to get active and join a sports team. With the new year coming up, why not use your new year’s resolution to get active and try out one of your local clubs? Not only will it help with your confidence, it will also help make you fitter and work on your physical and mental health. Whether you are motivated to get into sport because you like to follow the Biggest Athlete Influencers in Sport, or it has been something you have always loved, it is always a good idea to get into fitness.

Football

Football is played worldwide and one of the most popular sports on the planet. This means that the barrier to entry is easy, making it the perfect option for a new sport in the new year. If you haven’t played in a long time, you could start with 5 a-side, alternatively you could see if your local indoor centre has an indoor club that you can join. It may be that you feel pretty confident and could go straight to a Saturday team and play 11 a side. If you want to start in a lower league you could take part in a 11 a side Sunday team which tends to be of a lower standard. Football is great if you don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to a sport.

BadmintonBadminton

If racket sports are your thing, then Badminton is a great way to get active. It’s played indoors making it accessible all year round and doesn’t require a lot of equipment. It’s a great alternative to the gym, works the entire body and you’ll make new friends. Most clubs opt for you to play doubles helping you work on your coordination and communication but most of all it’s good fun.

Boxing

Another sport that requires very little equipment is boxing. If you’ve had a stressful day at work, there is nothing more stress relieving than punching a punch bag. Most towns or cities will have a local club that you can join and will run sessions depending on your ability. Why not get a friend to come along with you, they will motivate you to go each week and you can get competitive with them.

Golf

If you are looking for a sport that is less strenuous but still great for getting active then golf would be a great option. An 18 hole golf course requires plenty of steps, getting you active and when playing, working on certain skills like coordination and patients. It’s a great sport that you can do with your friends and get competitive with them. Plus, many courses have clubs that you can join, helping you meet new people and players to play with.

The list of sports that you can take part in are endless. Our advice is to just go for it, give it a try and if you don’t like it, try a different sport. Just remember to always stretch after to reduce the chance of injury, and if you have one use a foam roller as these are great for getting rid of deep muscle aches.
