In our busy lives, we often sacrifice carrying out certain beauty habits as they are seen as ‘too much hassle’. Now, I don’t want us to fall out here… Let us try and see these habits as a way of self-care and looking after ourselves. Here are 8 beauty habits to keep yourself in check…

Care For Your Hands

You know, our hands go through a lot. Washing with antibacterial soap, facing cold weather and generally using them can cause dryness and feel neglected.

Using a hand cream is one of the best ways to moisturise the skin on our hands. Your hands will feel smoother, softer and long-term keep them looking younger – fulfilling your chances of becoming a hand model, eh?

Another great way to give your hands that extra bit of love is to apply cuticle oil. By applying a small amount of oil to your cuticles this will increase the circulation around your nails, stimulate nail growth and overall help to protect your nails. And if you are someone who gets a regular ‘mani’, cuticle oil is a must to keep your nails looking their best.

My top tip to you – keep a small tube of hand cream and a cuticle oil pen on your work desk, in your handbag or even bedside table. That way, next time you are having a moment of not doing much, whip out the hand care essentials – all about making these beauty habits attainable!

Clean Your Brushes

One of the most tedious jobs. However, cleaning your makeup brushes and tools is VERY important. Let’s think about your foundation sponge or brush. Essentially, they soak up any excess oils or dirt you might have on your skin – pretty grim when you think about it. Therefore, cleaning your tools regularly is key!

Now this task can be a little time consuming, but keeping on top of a brush and tool cleaning system will help you out BIG time. Rather than using every spare clean brush you have – resulting in a large collection of dirty brushes – doing things little and often is the way to do it! So, if you find yourself using the same 6 brushes every day, start washing these 1-2 times a week rather than making your way through your 30-piece set. And if you are a fan of the beauty blender sponge, ideally you want to be cleaning this every day with anti-bacterial soap – preferably right before you apply your makeup. This may sound excessive, but sponges absorb liquid and dirt more easily.

Maintain Your Mop

Our hair often needs a bit more fuss than just shampooing and conditioning. So, there are a few things to do to give our hair some extra love!

Applying a hair oil to your hair reduces frizz, hydrates, improves hair growth and can even prevent bacterial infections – hair oiling helps to remove residual bacteria from dead skin and hair, often the cause dandruff.

You can purchase hair styling oils and serums in a bottle from your local beauty retailer. These types of oils and serums are more for finishing things off and to leave in your hair. However, if you are after a more intensive treatment, it’s time to raid your kitchen cupboards.

Hair oiling is the process of pouring oil onto the hair and massaging it into the scalp to increase moisture and shine. This can be done with different types of oil – olive, coconut, almond and so on. The oil is left on the hair for a matter of hours or overnight and then washed as normal rinsing thoroughly. This process doesn’t need to be carried out very often – it is recommended no more than 1-2 days a week.

Using a hair mask is another way to nourish and care for your hair. Hair masks are versatile for specific hair care needs. Therefore, if you are after a mask to target particular concerns or hair texture, you will be able to find the right one for you. Use a hair mask 1-2 times a week to keep your mop in tip-top.

Wear SPF

Hello, I’m being the annoying parent on holiday nagging you to put some more sun cream on. But it is true – SPF is so important! You may think, “Oh I’m not going outside today…” or “It isn’t sunny, so I don’t need to worry…”, when actually, it’s not like that.

SPF protects your skin from UVB rays. There is a common misconception that on cloudy days, you don’t need to apply sun protection to your skin. Up to 80% of the sun’s rays can still pass through clouds – so it is a no brainer to lather some on!

Wearing SPF also lowers your risk of skin cancer, prevents ageing of the skin and helps maintain an even skin tone by preventing any discolouration or dark spots. Give your skin the care and attention it needs – it will be appreciated in the future.

Moisturise Your Neck

When it comes to applying moisturiser, often forgotten about is the neck – it needs love too! We daily moisturise our face – well I hope you do – to help with skin repair and prevent dryness. So why would you want to miss out on these benefits for your neck?

Make sure to carry out upwards motions on the neck when applying moisturiser – this helps to work against gravity, lift the skin and provide elasticity to prevent skin ageing.

Repeat after me… DON’T NEGLECT THE NECK!

Sanitise Your Phone

Did you know that our phones are one of the dirtiest objects we come in contact with every day? According to scientists at the University of Arizona, your phone is likely to be ten times dirtier than your toilet seat – lovely stuff!

THEREFORE, sanitising your phone regularly is essential. Think about how often you hold your phone and then touch your skin… Or worse, press your phone against your cheek when on a call – probably best not to think about that one. Cleaning your phone will provide potential benefits including improving skin’s appearance and catching fewer germs – add it to your beauty habits list NOW!

Nourish Brows & Lashes

Yes, they need to be nourished too, you know! Applying castor oil to our brows and lashes regularly helps to keep them hydrated, grow thicker and longer. Castor oil is derived from the bean of the castor oil tree. The fatty acids that make up castor oil are believed to be extremely beneficial for our skin. If you’re looking to enhance your lashes even further, you might be interested in DIY lash extensions at home. These cost-effective and convenient methods allow you to achieve the luscious lashes you desire in the comfort of your own space.

It is important to make a few checks before you decide to purchase a bottle of castor oil. Ensure that the one you find is 100% pure as some can be mixed in with other ingredients. This may cause irritation or simply won’t work.

If you are someone who regularly wears makeup, doing this as one of your beauty habits will provide that extra bit of care for your brows and lashes.

Increase Water Intake

You’ve heard it time and time again, but water is your best friend! Drinking water has the power to improve skin, hair and nails – even keep us sane! It is recommended to drink 2-4 litres of water a day, so if you are well off that mark, it’s time to get sipping…

Clearer skin, stronger hair and generally feeling much more energised are some of the positives of consuming more water. Purchasing a reusable bottle is a great way to encourage drinking more. Plus, it limits single-use plastic which we all know is the ideal to avoid. Bottles can range in size from 500ml to 1 litre, so if you do the maths, drinking 4 or 2 of these will do the trick.

Keeping On Top of Your Beauty Habits

These beauty habits are by no means must dos – don’t worry, you will not be told off – well maybe not… Nevertheless, if you can start to carry out some of these habits more often, you will feel better for it and will be doing yourself a favour in years to come. All the best folks!
