Everyone loves mayonnaise. In a sandwich, or just on its own as a healthy treat. But buying it from the shops is expensive, with artisan mayonnaise costing as much as £30 for a tablespoon. But, what if I was to tell you there was a way you could make your own mayonnaise at home for a fraction of the cost? Well there is!

  • What IS Mayonnaise?

Mayonnaise derives from the Latin word “Mayonnaise” meaning “Mayonnaise”.  So in a way, by making your own mayonnaise you are one step closer to becoming a Roman senator.

  • How do you make your own Mayonnaise?

Good question! When first researching this article, I didn’t think it was possible. I assumed mayonnaise, like glass or soup, required huge industrial equipment to make! But it turns out you can make it at home from stuff you might already have!

  • What equipment will you need?

Firstly, you’re going to need a jar. This is the most expensive component, but if you wait inside a recycling bin, eventually one will turn up. Give it a quick lick clean and BAM- instant jar. Apart from the jar, the only thing you need are a clean pair of hands and you’re ready to make mayonnaise!

Good question! Once you have the (clean) jar, you’ll need some eggs. Any type of egg will do as they are all basically the same. But to save money, you can find eggs in most trees. Just make sure to get the land owners permission first. Or, harvest them under the cover of darkness.

5) Cracking the eggs.

Cracking an egg is an art form. With clean hands, suddenly squeeze the egg AS HARD AS YOU CAN. Keep your fist as tight as possible to make sure you keep hold off all the shell. When the egg is in the jar, sprinkle in the egg shell for a rustic, crunchy texture.

Good question! Branding and marketing is the most important part of any product. Which is why you need to design your label before doing anything else. Avoid violating international copy-write law by making sure your mayonnaise is distinct and unique. Use symbols such as umlauts and Cyrillic script for a glamorous, European feel.

7) Mixing in the oil.

As any chef will tell you, all oil is exactly the same. If you have a peanut allergy, DO NOT USE PEANUT OIL. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Other than that, go wild and let your imagination lead the way!

With the egg, egg shell and oil in the jar, mix it well using your fingers. Try not to lick your fingers, but it’s ok if you do a little bit as everyone deserves a treat every now and again.

Congratulations on making your first jar of mayonnaise!  They will keep for exactly 7 months from mixing, so they make perfect Christmas gifts or break up presents. Remember, the sky is the limit, but watch out for aeroplanes!
