Camden Cox Interview

Camden Cox, what a privilege it is to grab some of your time, thank you!  I just listened to your new tune ‘Another’, and WOW, what a seriously superb track! The atmosphere, tension, build-up and drop, BOOM – the track gave me goosebumps – it’s only Monday afternoon and I feel like I need to go and rave! So, how are you feeling having just released a new song, and what’s the feedback been like?

I’m feeling fabulous! I love releasing my music, it’s a special moment every single time because my heart goes into writing these songs, and it’s amazing to watch people connecting with them!

As an artist, you are pushing boundaries as a DJ, vocalist, and songwriter! Taking on a lot more challenges covering all these aspects in your music – do you feel it pushes you more, creatively?

Absolutely, I love a challenge and have always worked well under pressure. I find that pushing boundaries gives me a huge sense of fulfilment and that helps with performing!

Abodus - Live until 29th Sep 24

You’ve established a huge fan base and with that comes a reputation. You’ve seen some monumental successes with multiple solo releases. Looking back at your music how do you feel within yourself that you have developed over the years since your professional career began?

First and foremost I’d be nothing without my fans! My music very much comes from an authentic place because I grew up on dance music, so it’s in my blood! As I’ve grown up and seen the world / been through heart break / learned more about myself, my music has grown alongside with me.

You’ve had some mega collaborations including the likes of Gorgon City, Sub Focus and Deadmau5 to name just a few! Is there anyone that you haven’t yet worked with that you would like to?

I’d love to work with Camelphat, Anyma, Charlotte De Witte, Diplo, so many amazing artists that I’m yet to cross paths with.

It’s hard not to talk numbers when yours are so impressive. Almost 1.5M monthly Spotify listeners. Your tune ‘Lady Love’ has almost 7.5M streams! As a relatively new artist what major successes have helped to propel your career?

My songwriting! I’ve had some great successes as a writer which I think has really helped with my profile as an artist. I was Grammy nominated for the first time this year which was a dream come true!

Many congratulations! You’ve not only attracted attention from globally renowned artists but labels too, with the likes of your track ‘Lady Love’ being signed to heavyweight Defected. Having worked with different labels, how do they differ?

Every label is different, with some come shows and a huge amount of promo, and others will see how the song builds before putting too much into it. Some are really amazing for building a brand, it’s important to work with labels that resonate with your sound so that the fans can crossover!

Who inspires you musically?

Robyn, Deadmau5, Roisin Murphy, Gorgon City, Rebuke, Massive Attack.

Summer is just around the corner, what are your plans and are there any standout festivals you will be performing at?

I’ll be doing a lot of shows in the US this summer! One I’m particularly excited about is Hard Festival in August, where I’ll be playing alongside Fisher and Chris Lake!

What is your top festival tip?

Remember to pack a gorgeous fan to stay cool, clothes you can dance in, and a disposable camera for the memories!

Describe the perfect day for Camden Cox…

Croissants for breakfast followed by a big walk, then maybe a massage and a little spa, get glammed up and go to a nice restaurant for some wine and good grub, then meet with a group of friends for dancing, hop on the decks for a bit, kebab on the way home.

What words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to pursue their musical dream?

Patience! Nothing happens over night, you have to really perfect your vision and sound, and that takes time! Stay loyal to the people who help you along the way and enjoy the success with your friends!
